Bank of Stanly Proposing Greenway Project

Tuesday, July 8th, 2003 - Albemarle, NC - What began as the relocation and concealment of a trash dumpster and the moving of generators will become another major redevelopment project in downtown Albemarle.

Uwharrie Capital Corp and Bank of Stanly are in the process of renovating their buildings on North First Street and the parking areas between First and Second streets to the former Alameda Theater and former Albemarle Hotel. Those renovations will convert paved and utility-lined service areas into a park-style greenway in downtown Albemarle. The park's total cost is not yet available but will be carried in large part by Uwharrie Capital Corp and the Bank of Stanly.

"This company made a commitment to Albemarle and Stanly County a long time ago," Uwharrie Capital Corp President Ron Davis told Albemarle City Council last night during its regular meeting. "In addition to redoing the exteriors of Uwharrie Capital Corp, Bank of Stanly and The Arc, we are trying to improve the two areas". "We'll put a park-like area between them, making it appealing to people."

An architect is currently designing plans. Uwharrie Capital Corp would also like to bury the utility lines inside the greenway. An estimated $200,000 would put the utility lines below ground in a process that could be done on a shared cost basis with the bank and other property owners. Time Warner Cable and CT Communications will be contacted for similar estimates for their service lines.

By working together, we can continue to enhance the well being of the counties we serve and make a difference in our community.

Bank of Stanly operates full service banking offices in Albemarle, Norwood and Oakboro. Uwharrie Capital Corp, the parent company, is a multi-bank holding company located in Albemarle, NC.
