Laps for Lindsey raises $15,000 for children
Monday, September 29th 2003 - Albemarle,
NC - Mark and Karen did not use their daughters diagnosis
to pull away from the world. Instead, they organized a 5K
walk / run in aid of MPS research.
Lindsey has a rare condition known as MPS-III
or Sanfilippo Syndrome. In Laymans's terms Lindsey is lacking
a vital enzyme which is essential in helping her body break
down sugar chains in body tissues. This deficiency causes
a build-up of a substance in the central nervous system which
begins to cause problems as early as age two.
Associates from Bank
of Stanly and Uwharrie
Capital Corp along with over 300 other participants
raised over $15,000 by the end of Saturdays events. As
participants made laps around Albemarle High School's track,
a clown (below) stood by to cheer them on and give encouragement.
There was a poker run later in the morning with a motorcycle
entourage later that day. About 40 shiny motorcycles, of
various shapes and sizes took Lindsey and several invited
guests, also suffering from MPS, once around the track
before dispersing amid a crowd of enthusiastic supporters.

By working together, we can continue
to enhance the well being of the counties we serve
and make a difference in our community.
