Making A Difference, School Tools Campaign

Wednesday August 4th 2004 - Albemarle, NC - Communities in Schools is the nation's largest and most effective drop-out prevention network, helping young people stay in school, successfully learn and prepare for life by connecting needed community resources with schools.

During the month of August, WSOC-TV, in partnership with Communities in Schools, Stanly Memorial Hospital and other Channel 9 Family Focus partners kicked off the eighth annual "School Tools" campaign, a month long project to collect school supplies for children. Over the past seven years, the School Tools campaign has helped over 215,000 students in 22 counties receive the necessary supplies to successfully learn in school.

Throughout August, Channel 9 will be asking viewers and businesses to contribute pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, book bags and other school supplies. Collection barrels for donations will be located at participating area Food Lion stores and Stanly Memorial Hospital. The school tools collected in Stanly County are given to the students of Stanly County Schools through the assistance of guidance counselors and social workers.

The biggest event was slated for the day before school begins, Wednesday, August 4th. The Channel 9 Eyewitness News team broadcast live from the entrance of Stanly Memorial Hospital's Family & Education Center. In addition to members of the WSOC-TV news team, special guests at the collection site included the North Carolina Air National Guard and Communities In Schools representatives. The "School Supply Drive By" was aimed at encouraging individuals, businesses and industry, local churches and civic groups to drop off donations.

We proudly celebrate our diversity. Our overriding mission, to enhance the well-being of the communities we serve, influences each and every decision we make. After all, we support a vision that sees the greatest compliment to a people is to carry the traditions of its forebears into the lives of its children ... handing them the power to mold their futures without losing the character and values that make a community great.

By working together, we can continue to enhance the well being of the counties we serve and make a difference in our community.
